Between the World and Me, by Ta-Nehisi Coates

I hesitated to include this review on my blog, because I didn’t finish reading Between the World and Me. Not because it is a “bad book;” rather it is an exceptional one. Ta-Nehisi Coates is an admirable writer. His words are lyrical and flowing, prose with the soul of poetry. What became a stumbling block for me, was the stream of consciousness feel of the text. Written as an open letter to his son, Coates shares experience and wisdom, and history. Try as I did, I always felt like I was trying to grab hold of a narrative thread that kept slipping through my fingers. A beautiful book in its way–just not one for me personally. Yet I encourage you, dear reader, to give it a try!
