Inside the Author’s Studio with Ivy Meadows

Sketch of working little people with book.Today we welcome Ivy Meadows, actress and part-time PI (via author Cindy Brown), to the Author’s Studio.

  1. What is your favorite word?  I think it would be “play.” I love that the word represents both a live theater show and pure unstructured fun. Plus when I think of the word, I hear laughter.
  2. What is your least favorite word?  No. Why shut down possibilities?
  3. What turns you on creatively, spiritually, or emotionally?  Openness. It’s a tough thing for me, especially given the fact that my parents closed up tight after my brother’s accident. Theater taught me that opening up emotionally could be cleansing. I’m finally starting to apply that lesson to my real life, even my love life.
  4. What turns you off?  Belittling. I hate being dissed or condescended to. Unfortunately, as a blond actress in my twenties, it happens all too often. I’m not a fan of “mansplaining” either, but it can be helpful in my investigative work.
  5. What is your favorite curse word?  Dang.  It sounds good on its own (Dang!) and in multiple (Dang, dang, dang!) It’s also slightly misunderstood by folks outside of the West or South. It’s not a cleaned-up version of “damn;” it means something a little less serious. For example, “dang” is burning your dinner: “damn”  is burning down your apartment (and yes, I nearly did that once).
  6. What sound or noise do you love?  Applause.
  7. What sound or noise do you hate?  The sound of anything or anyone in pain.
  8. What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?  That’s a tough one, since I really love being an actor and a private investigator. I enjoy satisfying my curiosity about people and place and events – is “explorer” still a profession?
  9. What profession would you not like to do?  I’m currently working in a melodrama at a Western theme town called Gold Bug Gulch. The town was built around a gold mine in the 1800’s, so I’ve been thinking a lot about mining. That’s a job I would not want to do—lonely and claustrophobic and dark.
  10. If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?  Brava! You used the gifts I gave you well.

cindybrown-112_rt_smallwebCindy Brown has been a theater geek (musician, actor, director, producer, and playwright) since her first professional gig at age 14. Now a full-time writer, she’s lucky enough to have garnered an Agatha Award nomination for best debut novel (MACDEATH), a scholarship to the Squaw Valley Writers Workshop, and several awards for her fiction, playwriting and screenwriting work.

Though Cindy and her husband now live in Portland, Oregon, she made her home in Phoenix, Arizona, for more than 25 years and knows all the good places to hide dead bodies in both cities.
