FantasticLand, by Mike Bockoven

A huge theme park where the motto is “Fun is Guaranteed.”

A massive hurricane with its sights set on a large swath of Florida.

A substantial emergency plan that no employee ever anticipated needing and that is tossed out of consideration almost immediately.

Sure, power would go out, and flooding would be an issue. But, all in all, what’s the worst that could happen? In FantasticLand…everything and anything.

The narrative is made up of (fictional) interviews with staff members at the theme park and first responders who were horrified by what they found upon arrival. The details of what happens when a group of teenagers and young adults are left to keep an eye on a theme park trickle out as the interviews unfold. The park had generators. There was plenty of food and water. There were bunks and dormitories to house everyone safely. So how do the employees fracture into tribes, arm themselves, stage fight clubs, and murder one another in a matter of weeks? (And were there really body parts “decorating” one entire area of the park?) You’ll have to read the book to find out!

Fair warning: some of the descriptions can get a little gruesome and disturbing.
