Such an odd–yet oddly captivating–book!

Marcy Dermansky has a rather unique writing and storytelling style. I was a little put off by it at first, but I was pulled into the narrative within the first few chapters. Allison Brody has recently driven across the county and bought a beach house in North Carolina. And then a hurricane comes and leaves the house destroyed and Allison at a loss in every sense of the word. In short order, Allison meets a TV cameraman who offers her a clean room for the night–a decision that leads to an assault, brain surgery, a reunion, and a very strange journey to reclaim what was lost.

The characters in Hurricane Girl are simultaneously relatable yet slightly unbelievable. This is a book unlike any I have read, and, to be honest, I’m not sure I would read more from the author. But I do admit that this book kept me interested and coming back to find out how it would all end.
