There is a lot I appreciate about photography. Especially how good photography can capture a scene, a detail, a moment in a way that can bring back so many more scenes, details, and moments. History, too, is an interest, so Pete Souza’s photographic history of an individual I admire was a great combination. The images included walked the historical timeline from the first days of Senator Obama’s tenure through two elections, catastrophes at home and abroad, and the everyday moments we all so often take for granted.
I spent an enjoyable evening paging through all of the photographs, and reflecting on my own memories the images stirred up. I especially enjoyed the pictures of President Obama interacting and playing with the children around him. And, when I reached the final image, the White House as seen from the helicopter carrying the Obamas away after the inauguration of President Trump, I could almost hear the former President’s voice saying, “We used to live there.”
