No Way Home by Annette Dashofy

no-way-home-large-banner448.jpgSetting: Split between Pennsylvania and New Mexico

Characters

  • Zoe Chambers, paramedic and deputy coroner; best friend of Rose, girlfriend of Pete
  • Pete Adams, Vance Township Chief of Police; boyfriend of Zoe
  • Rose Bassi, Zoe’s best friend and mom to Allison and Logan

Plot: On an uncharacteristically warm fall morning, Zoe gathers in her barn with a group of riders and their horses for a trail ride. But before they can get going, another horse – a notably anxious one – returns to the barn without his rider, who had gone out earlier in the morning. When Zoe heads out to investigate, she finds the body of a county commissioner – and a puzzling set of inconsistencies. At the same time, Pete is dealing with what looks to become a drug overdose epidemic and Zoe’s best friend’s son, Logan, is missing in New Mexico. Zoe is eager to help figure out who killed the commissioner, but Rose needs her help in locating Logan. As Rose and Zoe head west to New Mexico, Pete promises to keep Zoe in the loop about the murder, as long as she fills him in on the search for Rose’s son, too. The story flips back and forth between the investigations, all the while somehow drawing closer together. Tension builds as the clues fall into place and, as a reader, I was anxious to see if anyone would put everything together in time to avoid more tragedy and violence!

Pacing: Brisk! Annette Dashofy keeps her characters moving along at a great pace for readers.

Predictability: Low; I was shocked!

Wild Card: Cards on the table: I’m kind of surprised that I liked No Way Home as much as I did. I’ve been a fan of the series, certainly, but I generally shy away from settings in the southwest. But the story was so clever and intriguing, that I couldn’t keep from turning page after virtual page. Annette Dashofy has crafted a suspenseful and satisfying story in No Way Home; it’s possibly my favorite of the Zoe Chambers mysteries to date.

Hit, Miss, or Draw?  A definite hit.

A relaxing trail ride turns tragic when Paramedic and Deputy Coroner Zoe Chambers discovers the body of a popular county commissioner in her Pennsylvania woods. Inconsistencies surround the horrible “accident,” but before she can investigate further, she’s pried away by a plea for help from her best friend whose son has been deemed a person of interest in a homicide over a thousand miles away. When he vanishes without a trace, his mother begs Zoe to help clear him and bring him safely home. The task takes Zoe out of her comfort zone in a frantic trip to the desolate canyons and bluffs of New Mexico where she joins forces with the missing boy’s sister and a mysterious young Navajo.

Back at home, Vance Township’s Chief of Police Pete Adams must deal not only with the commissioner’s homicide, but with an influx of meth and a subsequent rash of drug overdoses in his rural community. Bodies keep turning up while suspects keep disappearing. However little else matters when he learns that half a continent away, a brutal killer has Zoe in his sights.
