Problematic Summer Romance, by Ali Hazelwood

Maya is a 23-year-old genius trying to figure out her next steps after school. Faced with two exceptional job offers—one in academia and another in the corporate world—she’s taking her time choosing. The one choice she really wants seems to be the one thing she can’t have: her brother’s business partner, Conor.

There is no denying the connection Maya and Conor have. In an emotionally vulnerable moment, Maya calls her brother, Eli. Her call is routed to Conor, who mistakes her for one of their firm’s clients. Initial confusion cleared up, Maya tries to get off the call without further embarrassment.

No such luck.

To her surprise, not only does Conor listen to her situation and offer support and affirmation, but he also shows up in person at her apartment. In Scotland. From then on, something just clicks between the pair. Despite their 15-year age difference (a fact that is infinitely more problematic for Conor than Maya) they talk or text daily for years.

Maya makes no secret of her growing feelings for Conor. He, though, is intractably opposed.

Now, faced with time together in Italy for Eli’s wedding after a three-year absence from one another’s lives, Maya resolves to force the issue—for better or for worse.

Problematic is the keyword in this title–mainly because this reader felt problematically frustrated by the VERY slow-burning pace! Maya and Conor are complex characters carrying around a flight-full of baggage between them. Ali Hazelwood makes readers wait for the ultimate romantic resolution—and it’s worth it.
