Never Been Shipped, by Alicia Thompson

A fan reunion cruise gives the former bandmates of ElectricOh! a chance to reclaim the spotlight, but not everyone is eager to set sail. Lead singer Micah approaches the reunion with serious reservations and specific demands, much to the frustration of guitarist and ex-flame Ryder. While the remaining members—John, Steve, and Frankie—seem content either way, once everyone signs on, these musicians must navigate a sea of unresolved tensions.

The band’s history runs deep. Founding members John and Micah started as best friends, but when success came and Micah began dating Ryder, cracks formed in their once-solid friendship. Just as ElectricOh! was gaining momentum, Micah abruptly disbanded the group, buying out her bandmates and fulfilling the contract solo. Their relationships remained strained until the cruise opportunity brought them back to the same table.

Alicia Thompson excels at creating atmosphere in “Never Been Shipped” – I felt like I was aboard the cruise ship alongside the characters. However, the novel relies heavily on exposition, spending too much time explaining the past and telling rather than showing how John and Micah care for each other. Their mutual worry about having missed their romantic chance feels repetitive, and by the time the real reason behind the band’s breakup is revealed, the impact feels lackluster.

While the chemistry between John and Micah delivers some passionate moments that romance readers will appreciate, I struggled to connect emotionally with the characters. I was curious enough to keep reading, but never felt that can’t-put-it-down urgency. Music lovers will enjoy the references throughout and the extensive playlist included with the book.
