Under the Banner of Heaven, by Jon Krakauer

Subtitle: A Story of Violent Faith

Fascinating and tragic. Under the Banner of Heaven chronicles the violent history of the Mormon religion. Over the years, the base has fractured and split into numerous sects of varying rigidity and interpretations.

At the heart of the book is the murder of a young mother and her baby. The murderers were the brothers-in-law and uncles of the victims, and they testified that they were acting on God’s orders when they carried out the attack. It was bloody and horrendous and, honest, difficult to read at times.

This entire book is intriguing and disturbing. How do believers twist and torture faith into something so dark and deadly? And for what reason?
