It’s a chilling scenario: emergency first responders being targeted. I remember seeing something similar on an episode of “Criminal Minds,” once, and it was disturbing enough to have stuck with me for all this time. It’s a scenario that Annette Dashofy presents in With a Vengeance, her fourth Zoe Chambers mystery. A paramedic team is shot at, one of the team members killed, when a shooter lures them out with a false distress call. Both of the medics involved are friends of Zoe’s, who is herself a paramedic, and the longer the killer is at large, the more nervous both she and Pete become – not to mention all of the other emergency staff in the county.
Annette Dashofy always writes a compelling story with an absorbing plot, and With a Vengeance is no different. But it’s her characters that really draw me in to her stories. Zoe is smart, feisty, and self-reliant; the kind of person you just know you would like were she real and standing in front of you. And Pete is rugged, capable, and so clearly besotted by Zoe that I, as a reader, can’t help but love him. Even when he puts his foot in his mouth, Zoe knows that it’s because of how much he cares for her and wants to keep her safe. Being that they both hold dangerous jobs – her a paramedic, he the Police Chief – it’s a worry and a want that both have. And it’s a key element in Vengeance, given the plot. I was somewhat taken aback by the interactions between Zoe and her best friend – the smallest things seemed to set Rose off, and Zoe certainly had my sympathy, being both homeless and without her beloved truck! All throughout my reading, I was silently (and then not so silently) urging and imploring Zoe to move in with Pete – I really like them together as a couple and would love to see more of their romance in future books.
In the meantime, I’ll probably head back into Zoe’s world and treat myself to a re-read; I was so eager to find out what would happen next that I just gulped down the chapters of this one!

At the same time, Vance Township Police Chief Pete Adams races to track down a gun, a mysterious all-terrain vehicle, and the sniper before Zoe goes back on duty, placing herself—and Pete—firmly in the gunman’s crosshairs.
