A Disguise to Die For by Diane Vallere

Family means everything to Margo Tamblyn, so when her father has a heart attack, she doesn’t hesitate to pack her bags and come back home to Proper City, Nevada to look after him. Margo has been living and working in Las Vegas as a magician’s assistant. I absolutely loved the image of her packing her bags and strapping them to her scooter . . . and then hiring a taxi to bring her cat, Soot, along behind her. How clever and very . . . Margo. She’s a wonderfully smart, quirky, and fresh character. What begins as a short-term stay grows longer and longer when a client at her family business, costume shop Disguise DeLimit, is found dead at his own party – and the person standing over him with a knife is the woman who Margo thinks of as a mother.

A Disguise to Die For is a quick-paced read; Diane Vallere has a knack for making you want to squeeze in just one more chapter into whatever reading time you have available. She also does a great job of keeping readers on their toes as far as the mystery is concerned! At one point, I was even suspecting a couple of the most unlikely characters! (Thank goodness I was wrong.)  Proper City is a small town with a unique twist and I don’t think I’ve ever read a character quite like this cast. This book is refreshing, funny, and sharp – a great addition to the cozy mystery scene!

No sooner does former magician’s assistant Margo Tamblyn return home to Proper City, Nevada, to run Disguise DeLimit, the family-owned costume shop, than she gets her first big order. Wealthy nuisance Blitz Manners needs forty costumes for a detective-themed birthday bash. As for Blitz himself, his Sherlock Holmes is to-die-for—literally—when, in the middle of the festivities, Margo’s friend and party planner Ebony Welles is caught brandishing a bloody carving knife over a very dead Blitz.

For Margo, clearing Ebony’s name is anything but elementary, especially after Ebony flees town. Now Margo is left to play real-life detective in a town full of masked motives, cloaked secrets, and veiled vendettas. But as she soon learns, even a killer disguise can’t hide a murderer in plain sight for long.
