They say you always want what you can’t have and that’s certainly true for Zeke and Trula. He’s a federal special investigator sent to New Orleans to find a dangerous killer. She’s a stunningly beautiful and wholly unattainable madam of one of the red light district’s most popular houses. They are instantly drawn together but both Trula and Zeke fight their growing attraction. And yet, we readers are in the know: we see how Zeke and Trula can heal themselves and each other if they would only give in to love.
A Haunting Desire is another work of historical fiction from Julie Mulhern. But, for this story, she takes us quite further back than the 1970’s. New Orleans in 1902 is a seedy scene charged with sexuality and danger – especially given the killer roaming the streets. I loved the atmosphere and the story. It was hard to put the book down when I needed to! Zeke and Trula are endearing and real – even if they are equally stubborn and hard-headed. I waited as they danced around one another, tempting and taunting, and gasped at how they still managed to hurt one another so deeply in the name of saving themselves.
But A Haunting Desire is more than a historical romance. Julie Mulhern weaves in a puzzling murder mystery and moving family drama. I couldn’t be more of a fan of this book or this author.
About the Book
A killer walks the streets of New Orleans, eviscerating men and leaving them in the streets, and for madam Trula Boudreaux, it’s bad for business. Trula needs help but she’s not prepared for Zeke Barnes, the charming would-be savior who darkens her doorway-or the yearning he awakens. For while Trula knows well the delights of lust, she avoids love at all costs…
Investigating the killer was one thing, but Zeke can’t help but be enchanted by the gorgeous mystery woman who runs an exclusive brothel. Caught between his duty to protect the city and his clear-as-day desire for Trula, Zeke sets about capturing Trula’s heart-or at least a place in her bed. But with every moment Trula resists, Zeke falls into greater danger.
For his investigation into the haunted city and madam doesn’t just risk his heart but both their lives.
About the Author
Julie Mulhern is the USA Today bestselling author of The Country Club Murders.
She is a Kansas City native who grew up on a steady diet of Agatha Christie. She spends her spare time whipping up gourmet meals for her family, working out at the gym and finding new ways to keep her house spotlessly clean–and she’s got an active imagination. Truth is–she’s an expert at calling for take-out, she grumbles about walking the dog and the dust bunnies under the bed have grown into dust lions.
In addition to mysteries, Julie writes historical, romantic suspense. Her first romance, A Haunting Desire, was a finalist in the 2014 Golden Heart® contest and is available now.
Look for A Haunting Need in the early spring of 2016. Or, if your tastes run to 70s-style mysteries, mark your calendars for May when Clouds in My Coffee, book three of the Country Club Murders, will release.
