I’ll be honest. I do not know how I feel about this book! I sped through the chapters, eager to discover what would happen next. And yet, I did so with an unsettled feeling in my stomach, all the while wondering just what I was reading.
THE BOOK EATERS is much darker than its description; I would describe it as macabre yet disturbingly readable. It’s a family drama wrapped in a fairy tale and adorned with a gruesome bow. But you can’t help but unwrap the package to peer inside. Told in both present time and the past, readers follow Devon as she navigates the fate assigned to book eater women until the moment when the limits of her tolerance are tested, and she begins creating a future neither she nor anyone else could have seen coming. The ending felt abrupt to me. I’m left with so many questions; perhaps the author intends a sequel.
I’m still muddling through my feelings about this book, but I will say this: THE BOOKS EATERS is definitely a book I won’t soon forget!
