This story brought me to tears in all the best possible ways.
For me, the hallmark of an outstanding book by an outstanding author is a complete suspension of disbelief. When I can fully immerse myself in the characters’ world, well, that’s just a transcendent reading experience. Each time I opened The Four Winds, I was pulled into the story. I was standing in the once lush wheat fields with a heart filled with despair, yet harboring the smallest piece of hope. I was hiding under a table draped with a wet cloth to survive a day-long dush storm. I was surprised to see green grass and bright flowers as I drove to work because I was still envisioning a brown, arid landscape from the chapter I read the night before. I developed a very strong connection to the characters as I read.
Honestly, everything about this book is incredible, including the universal themes of equity and humanity that are as alive today as they were during the Great Depression. I truly can’t find or think of enough superlatives to describe Kristin Hannah‘s most recent novel!
