Apparently I’m in the midst of a reading slump. Of the last 10 or so books that I have read, I’ve been disappointed in seven or eight of them. Unfortunately, Dear Luke, We Need to Talk, Darth was among those that I found to be disappointing.

The concept and the cover comments are alluring, I admit. It is billed as a collection of “imagined letters, emails, text message,s and other correspondences” that pop culture icons never intended fans to see. A quick read-through of the table of contents promises excerpts from the diary of the shark from Jaws, a not to Billy “The Piano Man” Joel left in his tip jar, an incident report from the POV of the ice burg that sunk the Titanic, and, of course, drafts from the desk of Darth Vader breaking the infamous news to his son Luke, among dozens of others. Sadly, most of the entries fall flat or miss their mark.

At most, I would say this is a good book to have around for short, mildly smile-inducing segments. Perhaps I’m just not enough of a pop culture fanatic, or maybe my funny bone is broken. Regardless, I was let down by this book all around.
